U.S. Targets Iranian Missile and Drone Sites Following Cargo Ship Attack

The United States military carried out airstrikes against Iranian missile and drone infrastructure on Friday in retaliation for an attack the previous day on a Singapore-flagged cargo ship, the M/V Ever Lovely, near the Omani coast within the Strait of Hormuz. The incident occurred when several one-way attack drones targeted the vessel, damaging its bridge but causing no injuries to the crew. President Donald Trump had earlier reported that some of the drones were intercepted by U.S. forces, though one managed to strike the ship.

In response to this breach of a ceasefire agreement between Iran and the United States, which was established to facilitate ongoing negotiations aimed at ending hostilities, U.S. aircraft struck coastal radar installations as well as storage sites for Iranian drones and missiles. According to reports from Iranian media and verified by al-Jazeera, explosions were observed near Sirik, an important coastal city in southern Iran.

The actions taken by the United States underscore its commitment to maintaining maritime security within the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway through which approximately 20% of all oil traded globally passes. U.S. Central Command emphasized that their forces will continue to coordinate and provide support for safe passage of commercial ships transiting this critical strait. The organization also stated that it remains vigilant in ensuring compliance with the ceasefire agreement between Iran and the United States, highlighting the ongoing tension and diplomatic efforts aimed at stabilizing the region.
