Jury Convicts Former Army Soldier Zarrius Hildabrand of Second-Degree Murder
Former U.S. Army soldier Zarrius Hildabrand appeared unemotional in court as a jury found him guilty of second-degree murder for the death of his wife, Saria Barney, who died from a gunshot wound in their home less than a year after they married. The verdict came on Thursday following a trial that saw Hildabrand testify about his actions and lack of memory surrounding the night of the shooting. Despite his defense team's efforts to argue that Barney had taken her own life, prosecutors successfully demonstrated inconsistencies in Hildabrand’s account and highlighted his tampering with evidence.
During testimony, Hildabrand admitted to panicking after finding his wife dead and hiding her body in a drainpipe near their apartment. He also confessed to using her phone to send messages to colleagues claiming she had gone missing while walking to work the day after their night out celebrating his 21st birthday. These actions furthered the prosecution's case against him, leading to additional charges of tampering with evidence.
Hildabrand’s sentencing is set for October 23, and under Alaska law, he faces a potential sentence ranging from 15 to 99 years in prison. The conviction marks a significant legal outcome in what has been a closely watched case due to the unusual circumstances surrounding Barney's death and Hildabrand's subsequent actions.
