Pentagon Establishes Centralized Drone Office to Oversee Future Warfare Innovations
The Department of Defense has established a new office called the Direct Reporting Portfolio Manager for Unmanned Systems (DRPM-UxS) to consolidate and oversee all drone and autonomous systems programs within the military. This move, announced through a June 29 memo made public on Wednesday, places these initiatives under the direct authority of Deputy Secretary of Defense Stephen Feinberg, bypassing traditional service-level oversight. The DRPM-UxS will manage everything from small drones to unmanned boats and ground robots, as well as the software that guides them. This centralization aims to streamline development, procurement, deployment, and maintenance processes for unmanned systems across all domains.
The new office's broad authority includes acting as a milestone decision-maker for drone programs, allowing it to determine whether weapons advance through development stages. It also grants the DRPM-UxS precedence in acquisition matters, with only Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth retaining higher authority. Furthermore, the office will serve as the single point of contact for commercial tech firms via the Defense Innovation Unit, ensuring a unified approach to integrating cutting-edge technology.
This reorganization is part of a broader initiative by Defense Secretary Hegseth to accelerate weapon development and deployment. However, it has raised concerns about oversight, with a recent Government Accountability Office report highlighting potential risks associated with rapid fielding without adequate testing and evaluation. The establishment of the DRPM-UxS underscores the Pentagon's commitment to unmanned systems as critical components in future warfare strategies, reflecting significant budget allocations for these technologies in the latest defense spending requests.
