U.S. Diplomat Urges Taiwan to Build Deterrence with Drone Arsenal
Taiwan needs to bolster its defense capabilities by acquiring a substantial drone fleet to deter potential conflicts, according to Raymond Greene, the top U.S. diplomat in Taiwan. Speaking at a forum on drones in Taichung, Greene emphasized that an extensive array of unmanned aerial vehicles could significantly enhance Taiwan's security and reinforce peace in the region. The United States has been a staunch supporter of Taiwan’s military modernization efforts despite the lack of formal diplomatic ties between the two nations.
Taiwan's government is prioritizing investments in asymmetric warfare systems, including drones, as part of its broader defense strategy against an escalating threat from China. President Lai Ching-te recently requested additional funding for national security measures but faced resistance from the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) party, which passed only two-thirds of the proposed T$1.25 trillion ($40 billion) in extra defense spending. The government has since proposed a new package totaling T$210 billion ($6.59 billion) to be allocated for surveillance and attack drones through 2031.
Taichung, home to several key drone manufacturers such as Thunder Tiger and Aerospace Industrial Development Corp (AIDC), is at the forefront of Taiwan's efforts to develop a robust domestic drone industry. Mayor Lu Shiow-yen, a prominent KMT member and potential presidential candidate, highlighted the changing nature of modern warfare due to advancements in unmanned vehicles and called for bipartisan cooperation on promoting drone technology development.
The strategic importance of drones in contemporary military scenarios is underscored by their effectiveness in conflicts like Ukraine, where they have proven instrumental in defense strategies. As geopolitical tensions rise, Taiwan's push towards a more sophisticated drone arsenal aims to strengthen its deterrence capabilities and safeguard its sovereignty against potential threats.
