Woman Sentenced to 39 Years for Arson That Killed Two, Blames Victims
A New Mexico woman has been sentenced to nearly four decades in prison after pleading guilty to setting a fatal house fire that claimed the lives of two women. Cassandra Brazeal, 36, was arrested following the incident on November 28, 2023, and charged with aggravated arson and second-degree murder for the deaths of Mary Lou Maynes, 78, and Sara Louise Maes, 60.
The fire broke out in a house located on West Lincoln Street in Santa Clara, a small village near Silver City. Emergency services were alerted to the blaze but arrived too late to rescue the victims, who perished inside the burning structure. Brazeal's incarceration was secured when she made incriminating statements during a jailhouse phone call, where she suggested that the victims had somehow exacerbated the fire after it started.
In addition to her confession, prosecutors presented evidence of threatening text messages sent by Brazeal prior to the incident, in which she warned of plans to burn down another property belonging to a relative of the deceased. These communications further implicated her involvement and intent behind the arson.
Grant County District Court Judge James Foy handed down consecutive sentences totaling 39 years, with Brazeal required to serve at least 85% of this term before becoming eligible for parole. The judge emphasized that the crimes were particularly heinous in nature during the sentencing hearing, reflecting the severity and calculated nature of her actions.
