U.S. Secret Service Overlooked 102 Radio Alerts During Trump Rally Shooting

The U.S. Secret Service failed to receive 102 local radio transmissions regarding a gunman who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, 2024. According to a government watchdog report, the agency did not have a joint communications room with local law enforcement, which would have allowed them to receive critical information about the suspect, Thomas Crooks. Instead, the Secret Service only received five phone calls and three text messages containing crucial details.

Crooks opened fire during Trump's speech, resulting in injuries and the death of a bystander. The incident highlights significant communication gaps between federal agents and local authorities that could have potentially prevented the attack if addressed earlier. Additionally, Crooks was able to fly a drone over the rally area undetected due to an inoperable counter-drone system maintained by the Secret Service.

In response to the findings of the report, the U.S. Secret Service has agreed to implement several recommendations aimed at improving security measures and enhancing communication protocols between federal agencies and local law enforcement. These changes are intended to address the critical lapses identified during the recent shooting incident in Pennsylvania.
