DoorDash Driver Charged with Murder After Shooting Amazon Employee Over Joke
An Indiana man, Devonta Hodge, has been charged with homicide following a fatal shooting at an Amazon facility in Matteson, Illinois. The incident occurred on June 28 when Hodge, a 33-year-old DoorDash delivery driver, allegedly shot and killed Dylan Perkins, a 26-year-old janitorial employee, after a brief altercation in the parking lot.
According to prosecutors, the confrontation began with Perkins making what was described as a "joking comment" about Hodge's height while he was delivering food. After completing his delivery, Hodge reportedly returned and engaged in an argument with Perkins. During this exchange, Hodge allegedly pushed Perkins twice before pulling out a firearm and shooting him multiple times.
Perkins sustained fatal injuries from the attack and died later that night at a local hospital. Surveillance footage captured the incident, leading to Hodge's swift identification by law enforcement. He turned himself in to police on June 30 and is now being held without bond pending trial.
Cook County Judge Torrie Luciana Corbin noted in her order that Hodge displayed "emotional immaturity" in handling conflicts, which contributed to the tragic outcome. The judge also highlighted Hodge's attempt to avoid responsibility by returning the vehicle he was driving and lying about its whereabouts. With a prior conviction for unlawful use of a weapon but lacking a concealed carry permit despite possessing a Firearm Owners Identification card, Hodge faces serious legal consequences for his actions.
