Detroit Resident Fights Back as Billionaire-Owned Firm Takes Over Neighborhood

Christina Kary, an 86-year-old lifelong resident of Cadillac Heights in Detroit, has watched helplessly as Crown Enterprises, a real estate firm owned by the wealthy Moroun family, takes over her neighborhood. In 2024, she witnessed the demolition of the abandoned house next door without being given any prior notice or opportunity to purchase it herself. This property was one of many that Crown Enterprises acquired through city land deals and permits.

Over the past seven years, Crown has secured ownership of more than 160 lots in Cadillac Heights, transforming much of the area into barren plots. The company also established a concrete mixing plant just across from Kary’s home, which now generates significant noise and dust pollution, disrupting daily life for residents. Despite complaints about these conditions, city officials have largely turned a blind eye to violations by Crown Enterprises.

The takeover began in 2019 when the city entered into a historic land-swap deal with Crown Enterprises, transferring dozens of properties to the company. Additionally, the city granted Crown first dibs on purchasing other vacant lots until 2034, effectively sidelining local residents like Kary who hoped to buy and rehabilitate these properties themselves.

This situation highlights broader issues in Detroit’s approach to urban redevelopment and community preservation. While city officials claim such deals help revitalize neighborhoods by consolidating land ownership for future development projects, critics argue they disproportionately benefit wealthy investors at the expense of long-time homeowners and neighborhood character.
