South Korea's Chunmoo Rocket Launcher Gains Global Traction Over US Rival
South Korea’s K239 Chunmoo Multiple Launch Rocket System is rapidly gaining traction worldwide as a viable alternative to the widely-used M142 HIMARS. Nations such as Poland, Estonia, and Norway have opted for the South Korean system due to its production flexibility and expedited delivery times. Unlike the US-made HIMARS, which faces significant delays in supply, Chunmoo offers quicker access to critical military hardware. This advantage has made it particularly attractive during a period of heightened defense spending following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Poland stands out as a prime example of this trend. The country initially sought 500 HIMARS launchers but encountered obstacles with both the quantity and timeline for delivery from Lockheed Martin, leading to delays stretching up to five years in some cases. In response, Poland turned to Hanwha Aerospace, securing an agreement for 218 Chunmoo launchers just a year after signing the contract in October 2022. This partnership has since expanded, with Poland ordering additional systems and committing to local production of the Chunmoo’s precision-guided rockets starting in 2030.
Similarly, Estonia opted for nine K239 systems from Hanwha despite having previously ordered six HIMARS units that only arrived three years later than expected. The Baltic nation prioritized quicker delivery times over waiting another three to five years for additional HIMARS units. This strategic shift underscores the growing demand for reliable and timely access to advanced military technology, especially in regions facing increasing security challenges.
The success of Chunmoo highlights a broader trend where countries are increasingly favoring local manufacturing partnerships to ensure supply chain resilience and rapid deployment capabilities. As global conflicts evolve, nations are prioritizing defense systems that can be produced domestically, securing both economic stability and enhanced national security.
