Georgia Father's Murder Trial Continues in School Shooting Aftermath

The murder trial for Colin Gray, a Georgia father, is currently underway in Barrow County, marking its eleventh day. Gray faces 29 charges, including second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, and cruelty to children, all stemming from his alleged purchase of an assault-style rifle and ammunition for his then-14-year-old son, Colt Gray, in December 2023. This firearm was subsequently used in the Apalachee High School shooting in September 2024. Colin Gray has entered a plea of not guilty to all charges.

Prosecutors assert that Colt Gray entered Apalachee High School in Winder with the rifle concealed in his bag. He then reportedly hid in a school bathroom before emerging in yellow work clothes and opening fire. The tragic incident resulted in the deaths of two students, Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14, and two teachers, Cristina Irimie, 53, and Richard Aspinwall, 39. Numerous other students sustained injuries during the attack.

The legal proceedings against Colin Gray highlight the complex issue of parental responsibility in cases of gun violence involving minors. A status hearing for Colin Gray is scheduled for March, where he faces a total of 55 felonies, including four counts of malice murder. The trial continues to draw significant attention as it delves into the circumstances surrounding the devastating school shooting and the father's alleged role in providing the weapon.
