Minnesota Mother Convicted of Murdering Two Young Sons in Arson and Stabbing Attack
A Minnesota woman, Jennifer Marie Stately, 37, has been found guilty of multiple murder and arson charges after killing two of her young children and setting fire to her home's exits. The conviction follows a two-and-a-half-week trial where Stately faced five counts of first-degree murder and one count of arson. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota confirmed the verdict, which brings a measure of justice to the Red Lake Nation community deeply affected by the tragedy.
The incident occurred on March 15, 2024, when Stately stabbed her sons, Remi, 6, and Tristan, 5, before intentionally setting the house ablaze to prevent their escape. She then fled the scene with her then-3-year-old son, prompting an Amber Alert. Authorities later located Stately and the toddler in Todd County, approximately 150 miles from their home, with the surviving child exhibiting significant burns to his face and signs of neglect. Remi died from his stab wounds, while Tristan succumbed to smoke inhalation.
During the trial, Stately's defense argued for insanity, claiming she believed the house was "demonized" and her sons had threatened her. However, the jury rejected this defense, convicting her of two counts of first-degree premeditated murder, two counts of murder in the course of committing child abuse, one count of murder in the course of committed arson, and one count of arson. Sentencing for Stately has not yet been scheduled, and her surviving son is now under the care of her mother.
