Saronic Selects Brownsville, Texas for $3 Billion Autonomous Shipyard Project Port Alpha
Saronic, a leading manufacturer of autonomous vessels, has chosen Brownsville, Texas as the location for its ambitious new shipyard project, Port Alpha. The company plans to invest over $3 billion in this state-of-the-art facility, which will be one of the most advanced shipyards globally upon completion. Saronic's decision comes after careful consideration of multiple potential sites across California and Virginia.
Port Alpha is set to break ground later this year with an initial construction area spanning 835 acres, expandable to nearly 4,400 acres in the future. The facility aims to cater to vessels up to 850 feet long, equivalent to a U.S. Navy Wasp-class amphibious assault ship, and has potential for further expansion to accommodate even larger ships exceeding 1,200 feet.
The project is expected to generate significant economic impact, with Saronic projecting the creation of approximately 10,000 direct jobs over the next decade in fields ranging from welding and machining to robotics and software engineering. The company also estimates a total economic benefit of $424.5 billion for Texas and Cameron County.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced the project at Saronic’s headquarters in Austin, emphasizing its potential to inject approximately $750 million annually into wages, which he described as transformative for the state's economy. To support this major investment, the state extended an $80 million grant from the Texas Enterprise Fund, while Cameron County approved a 95% tax abatement over two decades.
Despite these incentives, the project faced local opposition with at least 40 individuals voicing concerns about granting Saronic such extensive tax breaks. Critics argued that a company valued at $9.25 billion did not need financial assistance to proceed with its plans.
Saronic’s Port Alpha will become the third site for the company, joining existing facilities in central Texas and Franklin, Louisiana. The new shipyard aligns with broader federal initiatives aimed at revitalizing U.S. maritime capabilities, including President Donald Trump's executive order on restoring maritime dominance issued in April 2025.
Dino Mavrookas, Saronic’s co-founder and CEO, highlighted the strategic importance of Port Alpha in advancing autonomous shipbuilding technology. He noted that while initial vessels may not be fully unmanned, there is potential for complete autonomy as technological advancements progress.
This development underscores a critical moment in U.S. maritime strategy, reflecting efforts to catch up with China's robust naval infrastructure. As Saronic continues its expansion and competes for the Navy’s medium unmanned surface vessel contract, Port Alpha stands poised to play a pivotal role in reshaping America's maritime landscape.
