US Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles Lost in Apparent Friendly Fire Incident Over Kuwait

Three U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles were lost over Kuwait in an apparent friendly fire incident, U.S. Central Command confirmed. All six crew members involved are reported safe. This event highlights the persistent risk of "blue-on-blue" incidents in modern warfare, even with advanced technology and extensive training. The incident occurred as the aircraft were operating in support of Operation Epic Fury.

This friendly fire event echoes similar incidents involving U.S. and allied combat aircraft since the Cold War. Notably, two comparable occurrences took place during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. A more significant friendly fire tragedy involved the shootdown of two U.S. Army UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters by U.S. Air Force F-15 Eagle fighters over Iraq in 1994, resulting in 26 fatalities.

In the 1994 incident, F-15 pilots misidentified the Black Hawks, which were part of Operation Provide Comfort, as hostile Iraqi Mi-25 Hind helicopters. Despite the presence of an E-3 Sentry AWACS aircraft providing airborne threat warning, the F-15 pilots were not informed of the friendly helicopters' presence. An investigation revealed insufficient visual identification attempts and confusion caused by external fuel tanks on the Black Hawks, leading to the fatal misidentification and subsequent shootdown of both aircraft.
