Helicopters Take Center Stage in RIMPAC Sinking Exercises with Precision Strikes

In this year's Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) sinking exercise (SINKEX), helicopters played a pivotal role by employing precision-guided missiles against decommissioned U.S. Navy vessels, marking a significant shift in naval warfare tactics. The exercises, which took place off the coast of Kauai on July 12 and July 17, saw multiple allied helicopter types engaging retired warships with various anti-ship weapons.

The U.S. Army's AH-64 Apache attack helicopters were among the key participants, firing Spike Non-Line of Sight (NLOS) missiles at the ex-USS *Mobile Bay*, a former guided missile cruiser. This engagement was conducted on July 11 and demonstrated the growing maritime capabilities of the Army, which has been increasingly involved in naval operations across the Indo-Pacific region.

Additionally, a Royal New Zealand Navy SH-2G(I) Seasprite helicopter launched an AGM-119 Penguin anti-ship missile against the ex-USS *Peleliu*, an amphibious assault ship. Meanwhile, a Royal Australian Navy MH-60R Seahawk helicopter fired an AGM-114N Hellfire missile at another target vessel. An Italian Navy SH-101 helicopter also contributed to the exercises by launching a Marte anti-ship missile.

These engagements highlight the expanding role of helicopters in distributed maritime strike operations, complementing traditional naval assets such as fighter jets, warships, submarines, and land-based missile systems. The use of precision-guided weapons by helicopters underscores their versatility and effectiveness in targeting mobile and time-sensitive maritime targets.

The Apache's participation in RIMPAC is particularly noteworthy given the Army’s previous demonstration of an AH-64 destroying a smaller boat with a Spike NLOS missile, which was first reported by TWZ. This latest exercise marks another significant milestone for the Army as it continues to expand its maritime mission capabilities.

Spike NLOS missiles have emerged as a critical tool in enabling these missions due to their operator-in-the-loop datalink capability, allowing for mid-flight course corrections and aimpoint refinement. This feature is especially valuable when engaging moving or time-sensitive targets at sea, where accurate targeting and battle damage assessment can be particularly challenging.

The involvement of multiple allied nations' helicopter assets in RIMPAC reflects the growing international cooperation in maritime defense strategies and highlights the evolving nature of naval warfare in the Indo-Pacific region. As these exercises continue to evolve, they will likely serve as a platform for further advancements in joint military operations and technological integration among participating countries.

These developments underscore the importance of continued collaboration and innovation in maritime defense capabilities, ensuring that nations can effectively respond to emerging threats in increasingly complex operational environments.
