U.S. and Allies Sink Two Decommissioned Navy Ships During RIMPAC Exercise

The United States military, along with its allied forces from Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Spain, Italy, and Japan, recently conducted a series of sinking exercises (SINKEX) as part of the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) multi-national exercise. On July 11 and 17, decommissioned Navy ships USS Peleliu and USS Mobile Bay were targeted by various military units using missiles and other weapons.

The operation took place more than 50 nautical miles off the coast of Kauai in Hawaii, providing a safe yet realistic environment for live-fire training. Video footage released by the Navy’s Third Fleet shows the dramatic moments when the ships are struck above and below the waterline, resulting in bursts of fire and water.

In one notable instance, AH-64 Apache helicopters from the U.S. Army launched Spike Non-Line of Sight missiles at the USS Mobile Bay, demonstrating their proficiency in naval engagements. Meanwhile, the Navy utilized a new type of maritime attack drone, similar to those used by Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia. These drones were deployed for the first time in combat against Iran earlier this month and showcased their effectiveness during the RIMPAC exercise.

The SINKEX exercises serve multiple purposes: they provide valuable training opportunities for military personnel on tactics and live-fire scenarios; they also test and validate weapon systems in real-world conditions.
