
AeroVironment and Applied Intuition Join Forces to Enhance Mayhem 10 Drone Capabilities
AeroVironment, a leading manufacturer of unmanned aerial systems, has partnered with software innovator Applied Intuition to integrate advanced collaborative autonomy into the new Mayhem 10 drone. This collaboration aims to provide the U.S. Army's Launched Effects program with a highly adaptable and intelligent unmanned system capable of operating in swarms or as hunter-killer teams under the control of a single operator.
AeroVironment first unveiled the Mayhem 10 platform in April, positioning it as an open, modular system designed for rapid payload integration. The drone is equipped to switch between various mission profiles, including intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), electronic warfare, communications support, and precision strike operations without altering its airframe. This versatility makes the Mayhem 10 a valuable asset in diverse tactical scenarios.
The addition of Applied Intuition's Acuity ISR/Strike software significantly enhances the drone's operational capabilities by enabling collaborative autonomy. The software allows multiple Mayhem 10 drones to operate as an intelligent swarm, sharing real-time data and dynamically adjusting their strategies based on evolving threats. This level of coordination is crucial for mission success in complex and contested environments.
Brian Young, senior vice president of loitering munitions at AeroVironment, emphasized the importance of open architecture in facilitating quick integration with third-party software solutions. "Our design philosophy prioritizes flexibility," he stated. "This approach allows us to swiftly incorporate new technologies and autonomy features, treating them as applications rather than fixed components."
The Mayhem 10 drone boasts impressive performance metrics: it can carry a payload of up to ten pounds and has an operational range exceeding sixty miles. Its assembly and launch time are minimized to less than five minutes, while its endurance extends for nearly an hour. Moreover, the system is engineered to function effectively in GPS-denied conditions, enhancing its utility in challenging combat situations.
Following months of integration efforts across various locations, AeroVironment and Applied Intuition successfully demonstrated the collaborative autonomy features during a recent showcase event. Although specific details about the demonstration were not disclosed, it marked a significant milestone in validating the software's capabilities for military applications.
Jason Brown, general manager at Applied Intuition, highlighted the importance of operator oversight in ensuring responsible use of autonomous systems. "Our Acuity ISR/Strike software empowers intelligent swarms to collaborate effectively and respond dynamically to threats," he explained. "This technology represents a leap forward in unmanned system performance."
Applied Intuition's expertise extends beyond military applications; the company is also valued at $15 billion for its work in integrating AI into various industries, including freight trucks, construction vehicles, agricultural harvesters, and other equipment. This extensive experience underscores the robustness of their software solutions.
AeroVironment recently secured a substantial contract worth $500 million from the Pentagon to develop counter-drone technology, further solidifying its position as a key player in defense innovation. The company's high-energy laser system, LOCUST, is another notable addition to its portfolio of advanced military technologies.
When asked about financial arrangements and potential contracts related to the Army’s Launched Effects program, representatives from both companies declined to provide specific details regarding funding or production timelines.
