Air Force Aims to Integrate Next-Generation Engine by 2030

The U.S. Air Force is advancing its development of the Next-Generation Adaptive Propulsion (NGAP) engine, with plans to have it ready for aircraft integration before the end of this decade. John Sneden, portfolio acquisition executive for propulsion at the Air Force, announced during the service’s Life Cycle Industry Days in Dayton, Ohio, that NGAP has completed a pre-prototyping readiness review and is now moving into the prototyping phase.

Prime contractors GE Aerospace and Pratt & Whitney are set to start building and testing prototypes of the adaptive engines. According to Sneden, these efforts will enable potential integration activities by 2030. However, he emphasized that the specific aircraft for which the NGAP engine will be retrofitted has not yet been determined.

The Air Force designed NGAP as an agnostic system to provide flexibility and adaptability for future needs. "We built NGAP as essentially an agnostic system," Sneden explained. "It was build the system first, open up options for the future and then when those options come to the forefront, we’ll be able to take advantage of it." This approach aims to ensure that the Air Force can leverage advanced propulsion technologies across its fleet.

The NGAP engine is expected to offer significant improvements over current systems, including higher fuel efficiency, increased thrust, and enhanced thermal management capabilities. Its adaptive jet technology allows for mid-flight adjustments in physical shape and internal airflow to optimize power needs and fuel savings simultaneously.

Originally intended as a propulsion system for the Air Force's F-47 sixth-generation fighter jet, which is scheduled for its first flight in 2028, NGAP has faced delays due to budget constraints. These delays have pushed back the engine’s development by approximately three years, meaning that the F-47 will initially fly with a different propulsion system.

Despite this setback, Sneden highlighted the importance of competition and innovation within the program. "Competition is the gateway that enhances producibility, drives innovation [and] keeps costs down," he stated. The Air Force's request for $514 million in fiscal 2027 and an anticipated increase to nearly $906 million in fiscal 2028 underscores its commitment to advancing NGAP.

The adaptive engine technology developed through NGAP is not limited to the F-47; it could also be integrated into other aircraft or even adapted for use in legacy platforms. "You can break those technologies and actually integrate them backwards, too," Sneden noted. This versatility ensures that the Air Force can maximize its investment in advanced propulsion systems across various applications.

As the NGAP program progresses, the Air Force continues to explore opportunities for broader integration of these cutting-edge technologies within its fleet, positioning itself to maintain a technological edge in future combat scenarios.
