Army Pilots Test New MV-75 Cheyenne Cockpit Before Deployment

The U.S. Army is taking a proactive approach in the development of its new MV-75 Cheyenne assault aircraft by involving pilots early in the design process to gather critical feedback on the cockpit's display system and cognitive workload impact. This initiative, which took place at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, in May, brought together experienced aviators from various units with Army experts to simulate flights using virtual versions of the MV-75’s cockpit.

The exercise aimed to refine the aircraft's design before its first flight and subsequent delivery to the 101st Airborne Division. The MV-75, named after the Northern Cheyenne Tribe and the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribe, is a tiltrotor aircraft specifically designed for operations in the Pacific theater. Its development timeline has been accelerated, with plans to field it to the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, by 2027.

Chief Warrant Officer 2 Julian Dilg, an experienced UH-60 pilot who participated in the exercise, highlighted significant differences between the new MV-75 cockpit and current aircraft models. "The displays are inherently different," he noted, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among pilots to develop effective solutions for navigating these changes.

Chief Warrant Officer 2 Jordan Brooks, a CH-47 pilot, echoed Dilg's sentiments, stating that the exercise was crucial in identifying common ground among participants and determining necessary modifications. "We were able to find enough common ground to work with in order to decide what changes needed to be made," he explained.

Feedback from pilots has already led to tangible improvements in the MV-75’s cockpit design. Army and Bell engineers have begun implementing adjustments such as grouping power and performance data together, which they believe will simplify decision-making processes for future pilots. Additionally, enhancements include refining display symbols, improving menu navigation, and enhancing alerting systems.

This early engagement with end-users reflects a broader trend in military aviation, where the integration of advanced technologies like drones and increased data processing requirements necessitate more user-centric design approaches. As militaries prepare for future battlefields characterized by unmanned aircraft and sensor networks, pilots will need to manage unprecedented volumes of information efficiently. The MV-75’s development process underscores the Army's commitment to ensuring that its new aircraft can effectively support these evolving operational demands.

The feedback-driven approach not only enhances the usability and efficiency of the MV-75 but also ensures a smoother transition for pilots moving from current models to this advanced tiltrotor aircraft.
