Amish Mother Acquitted in Son's Drowning Due to Insanity Finding
An Amish woman accused of drowning her four-year-old son in a lake last year has been found not guilty by reason of insanity. Ruth Miller waived her right to a jury trial, leaving the decision to Tuscawaras County Common Please Court Judge Michael Ernest. The judge's ruling was based on three independent mental health evaluations, all of which concluded that Miller suffered from a mental disease preventing her from understanding the wrongfulness of her actions. This tragic event unfolded after a series of bizarre incidents at a lake, including Miller driving a golf cart with her other three children into the water.
The complex series of events began on August 23, when Miller and her husband reportedly jumped into the lake, believing they were receiving divine instructions. Her husband later drowned after attempting to swim to a distant sandbar. Miller subsequently threw her four-year-old son, Vincen, into the lake, stating she was "giving him to God." She was initially charged with aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault, endangering children, and domestic violence. The bodies of both her son and husband were recovered from the lake.
Miller will now be committed to a psychiatric facility, with a placement hearing scheduled for March 13. Her condition will be re-evaluated every three years, and her defense attorneys express hope for her eventual return to her family. This case highlights the profound impact of mental illness within a community, leading to devastating consequences.
