US Military Bases Struggle to Defend Against Drone Swarms

The U.S. military is grappling with a significant vulnerability in its defense capabilities as it faces the growing threat of drone swarms targeting domestic bases. Army Lt. Gen. Joseph Jarrard, deputy commander of U.S. Northern Command and vice commander of the American contingent of North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), recently highlighted this issue at the annual Space and Missile Defense Symposium. According to Jarrard, current military bases are "ill-equipped" to handle coordinated drone attacks due to a lack of advanced detection systems and effective countermeasures.

Jarrard emphasized that the primary challenge lies in developing robust sensor technology capable of detecting and tracking enemy drones before they can launch an attack. The general noted that without adequate sensors, it becomes extremely difficult for U.S. forces to anticipate and respond to drone threats effectively. This limitation underscores a critical gap in the military's current defensive posture.

The Joint Interagency Task Force 401 recently released a guide on drone warfare that further reinforces these concerns. The document warns that once drones are overhead, it is often too late for effective countermeasures. This highlights the need for proactive measures to prevent attacks rather than responding reactively after an incursion has occurred.

In response to this evolving threat landscape, the military is exploring various counter-drone strategies, including directed-energy weapons and specialized ammunition designed to neutralize fast-moving drone swarms. However, these efforts are still in their early stages, and current defenses remain inadequate against coordinated attacks on bases.

Historical incidents underscore the effectiveness of small drones as a weapon. For example, during Operation Spider's Web last year, Ukrainian forces successfully infiltrated Russian territory with dozens of one-way attack drones, causing significant damage to military infrastructure. More recently, in the Iran conflict this year, Iranian-backed militias utilized first-person-view (FPV) drones to target U.S. bases in Iraq, demonstrating the potential for such attacks to disrupt operations and endanger personnel.

The recent use of FPV drones against Victory Base Complex in Baghdad serves as a stark reminder of the threat posed by these small but potent weapons. Video footage released by the attackers showed the drone surveying the area before striking its target, illustrating the precision and lethality of modern drone warfare tactics.

Given these threats, the U.S. military is accelerating efforts to bolster base defenses. The Army plans to integrate laser weapons into several key bases as part of a broader strategy to enhance protection against drone swarms. By the end of 2026, at least five major installations are expected to be equipped with advanced directed-energy systems designed specifically for counter-drone operations.

These developments reflect a growing recognition within the military that traditional defense mechanisms must evolve to address the asymmetric threat posed by small drones. As Lt. Gen. Jarrard stressed, addressing this vulnerability is crucial not only for safeguarding U.S. bases but also for maintaining operational readiness and strategic advantage in future conflicts.
