Kentucky Woman Pleads Guilty to Manslaughter of Newborn Son

In a court proceeding in Lexington, Kentucky, Laken Snelling, 22, pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges related to the death of her newborn son. The incident occurred on August 27, 2025, when officers were dispatched to a home on Park Avenue after receiving an emergency call regarding an unresponsive infant. Upon arrival, Snelling's roommates discovered the baby boy’s body wrapped in a towel inside Snelling's closet.

The medical examiner concluded that the infant was born alive and died from asphyxia. Following the discovery, Snelling faced multiple charges including abuse of a corpse, evidence tampering, concealing the birth of an infant, and first-degree manslaughter. She was initially charged on August 31, 2025, with the additional charge being added by a grand jury in March.

In April, Snelling entered a not guilty plea but later changed her stance after negotiations with the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney. As part of her plea agreement, she agreed to testify about what happened on that fateful day. During her court appearance on August 21, 2025, Snelling admitted that she had been under significant emotional stress and that her baby was born unexpectedly.

"I was under a lot of emotional stress and my baby came unexpectedly," Snelling told the court. "Instead of helping him, I ended his life and afterwards I cleaned up and didn’t tell anyone."

The prosecution has recommended a sentence of 10 years for the manslaughter charge, with an additional three years to be served concurrently for the other charges. Her sentencing is scheduled for October 16, 2025.

This case highlights the severe consequences faced by individuals who engage in actions that result in harm to newborns and underscores the legal system's approach to such cases as serious felonies rather than lesser offenses or mitigated circumstances. The plea agreement also reflects the complexities involved in these types of cases, where emotional distress and unexpected circumstances can play a significant role but do not excuse criminal behavior.
