China Completes Massive Artificial Island in South China Sea, Laying Ground for Military Presence

China has completed the initial phase of construction on a new artificial island at Antelope Reef in the South China Sea. Satellite imagery provided by Vantor reveals that the People’s Republic of China (PRC) has transformed a previously submerged reef into a nearly 1,500-acre man-made island equipped with a deep-water port and the beginnings of a military-grade runway.

The transformation of Antelope Reef began last year when Chinese dredgers started moving sand from the seabed to create dry land. The pace of construction was rapid, with more than one million tons of sand reclaimed in less than ten months. This new island is now 3.7 miles long and features seawalls and internal roads, marking a significant advancement in China’s reclamation capabilities.

The newly constructed island includes a deep-water port capable of berthing warships and a quay that stretches over 2,000 feet. Additionally, preparations are underway for the eventual construction of a 10,000-foot-long runway on the northwest side of the island. This infrastructure is indicative of China’s intent to militarize the area, as similar facilities have been established at other artificial islands in disputed territories.

Antelope Reef, also known as Lingyang Jiao to Chinese authorities and Đá Hải Sâm to Vietnamese officials, lies within the Crescent archipelago of the Paracel Islands. Although China has occupied these islands since 1974, their sovereignty remains contested by Vietnam and Taiwan. The construction activities at Antelope Reef underscore Beijing’s ongoing efforts to assert its territorial claims in the South China Sea.

The Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative (AMTI) identified several key features on the island from recent satellite imagery. These include a partially graded runway site and the excavation for large aircraft hangars, which are typical of military installations on other Chinese-occupied islands in the region. The ongoing construction at Antelope Reef highlights the PRC’s strategic expansion into maritime territories that are also claimed by neighboring countries.

This development is part of China's broader campaign to militarize and dominate the South China Sea through artificial island-building projects. Such actions have raised tensions with regional allies like Vietnam, the Philippines, and other Southeast Asian nations concerned about Beijing’s growing influence in their waters. The international community continues to monitor these activities closely for any potential escalations that could impact maritime security and freedom of navigation.

The rapid transformation of Antelope Reef into a fully functional artificial island demonstrates China's capability and determination to reshape the South China Sea landscape according to its strategic interests, further complicating territorial disputes in the region.
