Mysterious Nonprofit Launches Text Campaign to Support Controversial Media Merger
A newly formed nonprofit organization, Neighbors for Strong Communities, has emerged as a vocal supporter of the contentious merger between Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery. The group’s recent text message campaign in California aims to pressure state Attorney General Rob Bonta, who is leading legal challenges against the deal.
The text messages urge Californians to voice their support for the merger, citing concerns over potential job losses if Paramount CEO David Ellison follows through on his threat to relocate the company out of the state. This move would likely occur in response to ongoing opposition from a coalition of attorneys general, with Bonta at the forefront.
Ellison’s aggressive stance and threats have sparked significant controversy within Hollywood. The proposed merger has divided labor unions and led to intense debates over its potential impact on employment and media content. Neighbors for Strong Communities’ involvement adds another layer of complexity to an already heated situation.
The group denies accusations that it is a front organization (known as "astroturf") funded by corporate interests, but declined to disclose its financial backers when questioned. This lack of transparency has drawn criticism from free-speech advocates who argue that such practices are typical of powerful corporations attempting to control public opinion.
Rashad Robinson, co-chair of the Committee for the First Amendment, commented on the situation: “The behavior we’re seeing is what powerful corporations do when they are losing control of the story. The more the public understands what’s at stake—fewer jobs, fewer stories told, and even more power in the hands of a few billionaires—the harder it becomes for Paramount to defend this deal.”
A spokesperson for Neighbors for Strong Communities, Tanner Kelly, stated that while the group does not disclose its funders, they operate independently of Paramount. Warner Bros. Discovery denied funding the text message campaign, while Paramount Skydance did not respond to inquiries regarding the matter.
The debate over the merger has also touched on broader issues such as media bias and political influence. Suspicions have been raised about potential shifts in coverage at properties like CNN if the deal goes through, given Ellison’s ties to President Donald Trump and his father’s business dealings with the administration.
As the legal battle continues, Neighbors for Strong Communities’ actions highlight the growing use of grassroots-style campaigns by corporate entities to sway public opinion on major industry consolidations. The group's opaque funding sources and aggressive tactics have raised eyebrows among observers and critics alike, underscoring the need for greater transparency in such advocacy efforts.
