
Italy Considers U.S. Tech to Transform Missiles into Drone Interceptors
The Italian Air Force is considering a significant upgrade in its defensive capabilities by potentially acquiring advanced guidance systems from the United States. This move would enable the transformation of inexpensive unguided missiles into precision weapons, specifically designed for countering drone threats at a fraction of the cost compared to traditional air-to-air missiles. The U.S. Department of State has approved a Foreign Military Sale to Italy involving 5,031 BAE Systems Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) II guidance kits.
The APKWS technology can be easily integrated into existing unguided rockets by attaching between the warhead and motor. This integration includes four fold-out wings equipped with laser seekers that convert a missile costing less than €100,000 ($117,000) into an accurate weapon capable of engaging aerial targets. The system's affordability makes it an attractive option for countries like Italy seeking to bolster their defenses against the increasing threat posed by low-cost drones without breaking the budget.
According to a statement from the U.S. State Department, this proposed sale aims to enhance Italy’s ability to address both current and future security challenges while reinforcing its homeland defense capabilities. The deal also encompasses additional components such as launchers, warheads, rocket motors, and technical support, bringing the total estimated value of the potential agreement to $364 million.
Despite these approvals, Italian sources have clarified that no formal contract has been finalized yet, and the technology is still under evaluation. Should Italy proceed with the acquisition, it is expected that the Eurofighter jet would be the primary platform for utilizing this advanced guidance system. The Eurofighter has already demonstrated its effectiveness in combating drone incursions during NATO missions.
Earlier this month, an Italian Eurofighter participating in a NATO air policing mission over the Baltic states successfully intercepted and destroyed an unidentified drone that had entered Latvian airspace. This recent incident underscores the growing necessity for such precision-guided systems to counteract the proliferation of unmanned aerial vehicles. In May, the Royal Air Force (RAF) announced its own successful rapid acquisition and deployment of APKWS on Eurofighters within just two months.
"The Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System provides RAF pilots with a highly accurate means to neutralize aerial threats," said an official RAF statement at the time, highlighting the system's cost-effectiveness in engaging drone targets. With similar capabilities now under consideration for Italian forces, this technology could play a crucial role in enhancing regional security measures against emerging threats posed by unmanned aircraft.
