Escalating Middle East Conflict Sees Leaders Killed, Thousands of Munitions Deployed

The Middle East is engulfed in a rapidly intensifying conflict following a joint US-Israeli attack on Iran that resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other senior figures. This initial assault on Saturday morning struck multiple sites across Iran, prompting a swift and widespread retaliation from Tehran. Iran launched missiles and drones at targets throughout the region, including Israel, Bahrain, Qatar, and the UAE, escalating tensions without a formal declaration of war by the US Congress. President Donald Trump's initial call for regime change in Iran has since been followed by mixed messages regarding the objectives of "Operation Epic Fury."

The scale of the military engagement is significant, with Israel reporting the deployment of over 2,000 bombs within the first 30 hours of the conflict. The United States claims to have hit more than 1,000 targets in the first 24 hours, with President Trump declaring that "bombs will fall everywhere." In response, Iran has reportedly fired at least 390 missiles and 830 drones in the initial two days of fighting. Open-source intelligence groups are actively monitoring the strikes, which have already caused civilian harm, and have identified a diverse array of weaponry in use by all sides.

Among the munitions deployed, the US has confirmed the use of Tomahawk missiles, with footage showing their launch from the USS McFaul. Reports also suggest a new variant of the Tomahawk missile is being utilized in these strikes. The US Department of Defense has released images showcasing various weapons being prepared, including MK-82 500-pound bombs, BLU-109 2,000-pound 'bunker busters' equipped with Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) guidance kits, and AGM-154 Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW) bombs. Many of these weapons have been previously deployed in other US conflicts, including recent engagements in Yemen and Venezuela, highlighting the US's role as a primary arms supplier to its regional allies.
