Russian Strikes Decimate Ukrainian Civilian Infrastructure, Healthcare Facilities Hit
Russian forces continue to target civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, with recent strikes in March 2025 severely damaging medical facilities in the Sumy governorate. The small town of Krasnopillia, with a pre-war population of approximately 7,700, saw its primary healthcare services virtually cease after a community hospital was hit by a Russian drone, followed by a suspected double-tap strike on a shelter for evacuated patients. This attack occurred just hours after a larger regional hospital was also targeted, leaving residents without access to essential medical care.
These incidents are part of a broader pattern of destruction documented by Bellingcat, which has verified over 2,500 cases of civilian harm since Russia's full invasion began in February 2022. The verified data includes more than 1,100 residential structures, over 300 schools or childcare facilities, and 170 healthcare or humanitarian sites impacted by strikes. The widespread targeting of civilian infrastructure, including schools and hospitals, aims to make normal life impossible for Ukrainian citizens.
The use of cluster munitions, banned in over 100 countries but not by Russia or Ukraine, has been particularly devastating, accounting for over 1,200 casualties since the war's onset. Ukraine has recorded the highest number of annual cluster munition casualties globally for the third consecutive year in 2024. Overall, the civilian toll in Ukraine is estimated at around 15,000 killed, including more than 750 children, and 40,600 injured, highlighting the profound human cost of the ongoing conflict.
