Texas GOP Senate Runoff Looms as Republicans Await Trump's Endorsement

Republican leaders are actively lobbying former President Donald Trump to endorse incumbent Senator John Cornyn in the Texas GOP primary runoff, hoping to avoid a costly and potentially damaging intra-party battle. Cornyn finished ahead of Attorney General Ken Paxton in Tuesday's primary, but neither secured an outright majority, triggering a runoff election. Party strategists fear that a protracted and expensive fight between Cornyn and Paxton could deplete significant financial resources, estimated at over $100 million, and leave the Republican nominee vulnerable against Democratic candidate James Talarico in the general election.

Trump indicated on Truth Social that he would soon make an endorsement, urging the non-endorsed candidate to withdraw to unify the party against the "Radical Left Opponent." Senate Majority Leader John Thune and other Republican senators have privately and publicly appealed to Trump on Cornyn's behalf, emphasizing the incumbent's electability in November. Concerns persist among some Republicans that Paxton, who faces various scandals, could jeopardize a Senate seat held by the GOP since 1961 if he becomes the nominee. Paxton, however, has stated his intention to remain in the race regardless of Trump's decision, asserting that Cornyn does not represent the interests of Texans.
