Texas Democratic Primary Sees Significant Latino Voter Surge

Latino voters in Texas demonstrated a substantial turnout in the recent Democratic primary, signaling a potential shift in a demographic that has shown increased support for Republicans in recent election cycles. This surge offers Democrats renewed hope for competitiveness in Texas and other Latino-majority districts nationwide, particularly ahead of the pivotal November midterms. In five rural counties with majority-Latino populations, the Democratic primary garnered more votes than Kamala Harris received in the 2024 presidential election, underscoring the dramatic increase in engagement.

This turnout is particularly notable in South Texas, an area where Democrats have struggled to maintain Latino support in previous elections. State Representative James Talarico's victory in a Senate primary, fueled by a 22-point lead in majority-Latino counties, exemplifies this trend. The results suggest that the gains made by former President Donald Trump with Latino voters are not necessarily permanent, as evidenced by similar Democratic upticks in gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey last November.

The increased participation among Latino voters could complicate Republican efforts to flip several majority-Latino congressional districts that were redrawn in their favor last year. For instance, the newly configured 35th Congressional District, which is majority Latino, saw 7,500 more voters in the Democratic primary than in the Republican contest, despite Trump winning the district by 10 points in 2024. Democratic Congressman Henry Cuellar attributes this shift to Latino voters' dissatisfaction with high prices, Trump's tariffs, and expanded immigration enforcement.
