French Navy Deploys Innovative Modular Launcher System at Sea

The French Navy has taken a significant step forward in maritime defense technology by deploying Naval Group's Rampart modular launcher system aboard one of its Mistral-class amphibious assault ships. The system was captured on camera during training exercises off the coast of Toulon on September 21, marking the first public observation of this advanced weapon platform at sea.

Naval Group initially unveiled the concept in 2023 as a self-funded development effort and formally introduced it earlier this year under the name Rampart. The system is designed to provide ships with enhanced flexibility by allowing them to employ different types of rockets, missiles, and other effectors against various threats. This modular architecture represents a departure from traditional weapon systems that are typically built around a single type of missile or rocket.

The launcher's unique design features four interchangeable ammunition modules capable of accommodating up to 80 Thales 68mm laser-guided rockets or 48 NATO-standard 70mm laser-guided rockets, depending on the configuration. In other setups, it can carry short-range missiles and decoys, making it highly adaptable for different mission requirements.

The deployment of Rampart comes at a time when naval forces are increasingly challenged by the proliferation of inexpensive unmanned systems and missiles. This new system aims to address this issue by enabling ships to defend themselves against numerous low-cost threats without relying solely on expensive interceptors. By allowing for rapid reconfiguration, the Rampart launcher can be tailored to meet specific mission needs or adapt as threat environments evolve.

Naval Group plans to conduct the first at-sea firing campaign of the Rampart system in October during the French Navy’s Wildfire counter-drone exercise aboard a Mistral-class ship. This upcoming test will provide valuable insights into the operational capabilities and effectiveness of the new launcher, potentially paving the way for broader adoption across various naval platforms.

The successful integration and testing of the Rampart modular launcher could signal a shift in how navies approach defensive systems, emphasizing versatility and cost-effectiveness over specialized, high-cost solutions.
