Michigan Man Pleads No Contest to Torturing, Murdering Visually Impaired Girlfriend in Motel

Daniel J. Varnes, 47, faces decades in prison after pleading no contest to second-degree murder, torture, and concealing a death in connection with the brutal killing of his visually impaired girlfriend, Teressa M. Johnson. Varnes reached a plea agreement with prosecutors for a 32-year sentence in a state correctional facility. Johnson's mutilated body was discovered on September 1, 2024, at the Rodeway Inn and Suites in Saginaw, Michigan, following a disturbing encounter between Varnes and a drug dealer.

Authorities found Johnson's body after the drug dealer, whom Varnes had initially shorted on a drug transaction, was invited to Varnes' motel room. Inside, the dealer observed a body covered by a blanket and, upon Varnes's revealing gesture, saw Johnson's deceased form, which appeared to have been dead for several days. Varnes reportedly admitted to detectives that he subjected Johnson to "several acts of brutality" over more than a week, including severe beatings with his fists, boots, and various objects, and using needle-nose pliers on her mouth. Police recovered multiple blood-stained tools from the room, and an autopsy confirmed Johnson died from "multiple traumatic injuries."

Varnes fled the motel on foot when police arrived but was apprehended in nearby woods hours later. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for April 13. The case highlights a horrific act of violence against a vulnerable individual, with Varnes reportedly living with Johnson's body in the motel room for days after her death.
