Arizona National Guard Set to Deploy Advanced Gray Eagle 25M Drones
The Arizona National Guard is set to become the first state military unit in the United States to establish a dedicated company equipped with the cutting-edge Gray Eagle 25M drone system. General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, the manufacturer of this unmanned aircraft system (UAS), announced on Monday that the Arizona Guard will receive its initial batch of eight Gray Eagle 25Ms by September 2027, followed by an additional four units by December 2029.
Patrick Shortsleeve, vice president of Defense Department strategic development at General Atomics, emphasized the importance of integrating advanced autonomy and manned rotary-wing systems with the Gray Eagle 25M to counter evolving threats. "The Gray Eagle has a proven track record with over one million hours of safe operations," he stated, highlighting its automatic takeoff and landing capabilities.
The National Guard aims to establish a UAS company in each of its eight infantry divisions across the country as part of an ambitious expansion plan. The Arizona Guard, which is affiliated with the 40th Infantry Division based in California, will play a pioneering role in this initiative. Congress has already allocated funding for three Gray Eagle 25M guard units, underscoring the federal government's commitment to modernizing military capabilities.
The Gray Eagle 25M represents a significant upgrade from its predecessor, with enhanced features that include an open architecture design, advanced datalinks, and improved propulsion systems. These modifications are intended to increase the aircraft’s resistance to electronic threats while expanding payload capacity and extending flight duration. The "M" in the model designation stands for "modernized," reflecting these substantial advancements.
The first test flight of the Gray Eagle 25M took place in December 2023, shortly after the federal government awarded General Atomics a $389 million contract to develop this system. This investment underscores the military's focus on integrating advanced technology into its operational framework to ensure superiority against potential adversaries.
Once fully operational, the Gray Eagle 25M will be capable of supporting global missions under the direction of Combatant Command (COCOM) commanders and defending against threats in the Western Hemisphere. Its deployment marks a significant step forward in the National Guard's strategy to leverage cutting-edge technology for enhanced situational awareness and mission effectiveness.
The integration of these advanced drones into military operations highlights the ongoing evolution of warfare, with unmanned systems playing an increasingly critical role in intelligence gathering, surveillance, and combat support functions. As other states follow Arizona’s lead, the broader implications for national defense and security are likely to be substantial.
