Lawsuit Alleges For-Profit Jail Healthcare Provider Ignored Detainee's Burst Appendix

A lawsuit filed by the Pennsylvania Institutional Law Project accuses PrimeCare Medical, the former healthcare provider for York County Prison, and others of medical negligence after a detainee's appendicitis was allegedly misdiagnosed as heartburn and a stomach virus. Willie Cunningham, held at the Pennsylvania facility in December 2023, experienced severe abdominal pain for days, reportedly receiving no physical examination during multiple visits to the jail's medical staff. His condition deteriorated significantly before he was finally transported to a hospital.

Upon arrival at the hospital, Cunningham was diagnosed with a burst appendix, complicated by sepsis, gangrene, and acute kidney failure, conditions doctors reportedly stated should have been fatal. The lawsuit claims that nurses falsely documented taking Cunningham's vitals and conducting examinations. PrimeCare Medical and York County have denied all wrongdoing in their legal filings, and PrimeCare has not responded to requests for comment. This case highlights ongoing concerns regarding the quality of care provided by for-profit medical services within correctional facilities.
