US and Ecuador Conduct Joint Strike on Suspected Drug Trafficking Camp

US and Ecuadorian forces executed "lethal kinetic strikes" against a suspected drug trafficking training camp in northeastern Ecuador, near the Colombian border, as announced by U.S. Southern Command on Friday. The operation targeted a facility used by the Comandos de la Frontera, according to Ecuador's defense ministry. This action marks the first confirmed engagement involving US forces in South America since an operation in Venezuela in January, and the first publicly acknowledged strike since the US anti-cartel mission in Ecuador was announced.

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell stated that the Department of War, at Ecuador's request, carried out targeted action to dismantle narco-terrorist networks. SOUTHCOM commander Gen. Francis Donovan confirmed the operation aimed at "Designated Terrorist Organizations." While joint operations against these groups began earlier this week, the specific nature of previous actions remained unclear until this strike.

Video released by SOUTHCOM depicts troops boarding a helicopter on March 6, followed by aerial footage of helicopters over the camp, situated along a river. The footage then shows an explosion rocking the camp, captured from both air and ground perspectives, resulting in the complete destruction of the building. This coordinated effort highlights an escalating commitment to combating drug trafficking and associated terrorist activities in the region.
