Ecuador Extends Emergency Amid Escalating Violence Despite Crackdown

Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa has prolonged the nation's state of emergency for an additional 30 days, maintaining heightened security measures in critical drug trafficking corridors. This extension comes despite an ongoing surge in violence across the country, which has persisted even with a significant military presence and an aggressive anti-crime campaign. The continued instability highlights the challenges faced by the government in its efforts to restore order.

The escalating violence is attributed to a profound shift in Ecuador's criminal underworld, characterized by increasing fragmentation. Numerous rival groups are intensely vying for control over lucrative trafficking routes, key port access, and the country's prison systems. This fierce competition is fueling a relentless wave of violence that the government's current strategies have struggled to effectively curb.

In response to the deepening crisis, Ecuador is strengthening its international partnerships, albeit through diverse approaches. Joint military operations have commenced with the United States, specifically targeting "terrorist organizations" linked to drug trafficking and illegal mining. Concurrently, Ecuadorian authorities, in collaboration with Europol, the DEA, and law enforcement agencies in the Netherlands and Belgium, dismantled a significant trafficking network connected to the Lobos gang, which supplied cocaine to Europe for the Albanian mafia.
