Iran Boosts Oil Exports Through Strait of Hormuz Amid Regional Tensions

Iran significantly increases its oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz, averaging 2.1 million barrels per day since February 28, a rise from earlier in the month. This surge occurs despite ongoing regional conflicts and a reduction in oil production by several Gulf Arab nations. The increased exports provide a crucial economic lifeline for Iran, particularly as it navigates persistent opposition from the United States and Israel. The majority of this crude oil is reportedly destined for China, transported on older tankers that often operate under sanctions.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, and Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has previously issued threats against vessels in the strategic waterway, fueling concerns about potential supply disruptions. Despite these threats, approximately 15 ships have transited the strait since the recent conflict began, reportedly cooperating with the Revolutionary Guard. However, the precarious situation highlights safety risks for international shipping, with companies like Danish firm Maersk facing operational challenges, including ten vessels currently stranded in the region.
