AI-Generated Image and Fabricated Flights Deceive Dutch Newspaper Amidst Middle East Crisis
A major Dutch newspaper, De Telegraaf, published an interview featuring an AI-generated image and claims of non-existent evacuation flights from Dubai, charging €1,600 per seat. The story, published on March 5, highlighted a woman named Tamara Harema who purportedly organized private flights for Dutch citizens stranded in the Middle East following recent Iranian missile and drone strikes. Harema claimed to have secured an Airbus A321 and was arranging a second flight due to high demand, stating that official government repatriation efforts were insufficient. This article appeared as thousands of Dutch citizens were reportedly seeking urgent ways to leave the region, adding to the perceived legitimacy of the claims.
Bellingcat investigations revealed that the photograph of Harema, initially published with the article, contained artifacts consistent with generative AI. Four days after publication, De Telegraaf removed the image, though the interview text remained accessible. Further scrutiny of flight-tracking data found no evidence of the Airbus A321 flights Harema described. The fabricated story and image exploited a period of heightened anxiety among Dutch nationals in the Middle East, creating a false sense of a private solution to a pressing humanitarian concern. The Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs was even questioned about the article's claims during a television interview, underscoring the story's impact.
