Democratic Candidate's PAC Funded GOP Campaigns, Aimed to Counter "Election Deniers"
A Democratic candidate vying for Maine's 2nd Congressional District nomination, Jordan Wood, previously led a political action committee that distributed significant funds to Republican candidates and PACs. Federal Election Commission records reveal that democracyFirst PAC, under Wood's former leadership as executive director, donated over $75,000 to various House and Senate races during the 2024 election cycle. These contributions included support for incumbent Republicans such as Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) and Rep. David Valadao (R-Calif.), as well as a donation to the Republican Governance Group/Tuesday Group PAC.
Wood defends these actions, stating that democracyFirst was established with the explicit goal of defeating candidates aligned with former President Trump who posed a threat to election integrity. He asserts that every Republican recipient of their funds held positions with direct authority over election administration or certification and was running against an "election denier" in a primary. The PAC's strategy, according to Wood, was to create a "firewall" to protect future elections. However, some of these Republican lawmakers have supported conservative policy initiatives, including cuts to Medicaid and increased funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
