Controversial Pipeline Linked to 2015 Santa Barbara Oil Spill Reopens Amidst Legal Battles and Environmental Outcry

Texas-based Sable Offshore Corp. has announced the restart of oil flow through a pipeline that was responsible for a significant oil spill off the coast of Santa Barbara in 2015. This move comes shortly after the Trump administration issued an order, at Sable's request, utilizing the Defense Production Act to prioritize pipeline transportation services. The pipeline has been inactive since the 2015 rupture, which was attributed to progressive external corrosion, a concern that environmental groups argue remains a threat with this aging infrastructure.

The restart has ignited fierce opposition from environmental organizations and state officials. Sable has faced numerous legal challenges, state law violations, and criminal charges, and has not yet secured all necessary approvals from California state agencies, including the Coastal Commission. State Parks recently rejected Sable's application for an easement and ordered the removal of a section of the pipeline. Environmental advocates express distress over the potential for another disaster and criticize the administration's order as a "cynical misuse of a national security law" that overrides state and federal regulations.
