Toddler’s disclosure leads police to infants trapped in sweltering vehicle during mother’s shoplifting arrest

Erika Dixon Johnson, a 35-year-old North Carolina woman, faces multiple felony charges after police discovered her two young children suffering from heat exposure inside a parked van. The incident occurred on the evening of March 14 at a Walmart in Washington, North Carolina, where store security detained Johnson for allegedly concealing clothing items in a trash bin. Johnson, who had previously been banned from the premises, was already in custody for shoplifting and trespassing when her three-year-old daughter, who was with her inside the store, mentioned that her siblings were still in the vehicle.

When officers questioned Johnson regarding the location of her car, she reportedly provided false information to investigators. This attempt to mislead authorities resulted in additional charges of resisting a public officer. Police eventually located the blue van parked in an accessible space, where they found a three-month-old infant and a two-year-old child in distress. Both children exhibited signs of overheating and were transported to a local hospital, where they are currently listed in stable condition. Johnson remains in the Beaufort County Detention Center on a $35,000 bond, facing counts of child abuse, shoplifting, and trespassing, with a court appearance scheduled for early April.
