Oklahoma Regulators Shelved Internal Report Identifying Hundreds of Illegal Wastewater Wells
The Oklahoma Corporation Commission faces scrutiny after internal documents revealed the agency suppressed a comprehensive 2021 database project, known as the "Source of Truth," which identified nearly 600 injection wells operating in violation of state regulations. This project was designed to modernize decades of inconsistent paper records regarding the disposal of toxic oilfield wastewater. Beyond identifying illegal operations, the report highlighted that over 1,400 older wells were functioning without any established pressure or volume limits, effectively bypassing modern safety standards.
Despite possessing clear evidence of widespread non-compliance, state regulators chose not to enforce permit limits or address the dangerous lack of oversight on older infrastructure. Internal sources indicate the findings were never shared with the broader agency staff, leaving many employees unaware that the problematic wells they were investigating had already been flagged years prior. Since the report was shelved, the state has seen a dramatic increase in "purges," where high-pressure wastewater erupts from the ground, threatening groundwater safety. While an agency spokesperson confirmed the commission opted against utilizing the database, officials have declined to explain why they ignored the identified risks or failed to hold operators accountable for violating environmental protections.
