Discrepancies Persist Over Mysterious Aerial Encounter Near RAF Lakenheath
A November 2024 aerial incident involving a National Police Air Service (NPAS) helicopter and an unidentified object near RAF Lakenheath continues to spark debate following conflicting official explanations. During the encounter, the police crew reported being pursued by a large, highly luminous drone, forcing them to take emergency evasive maneuvers. While the UK Airprox Board eventually concluded in a June 2025 report that the crew had simply misidentified a local F-15 fighter jet, the finding has been met with skepticism. Critics point to unresolved data discrepancies, including inconsistencies regarding the aircraft's lighting, traffic collision avoidance system returns, and the reported 100-foot proximity of the object.
The mystery is further compounded by the withholding of a 30-minute infrared video captured by the police helicopter during the event. Although a single still image from the footage shows an unidentified blob, the full recording remains under the control of the Ministry of Defence and the MoD Police. Despite the official dismissal of the event as a case of mistaken identity, the lack of transparency and the subsequent implementation of new drone no-fly zones over sensitive military sites have fueled ongoing public speculation. With authorities stonewalling freedom of information requests, questions remain regarding what exactly the police crew encountered in the skies over East Anglia.
