Department of Energy Releases Heavily Redacted Files on UAP Briefing Materials
The U.S. Department of Energy has fulfilled a Freedom of Information Act request regarding internal communications about unidentified aerial phenomena, yielding only two documents that were significantly redacted. The request, originally filed in May 2024, sought correspondence involving former Secretary Jennifer Granholm that contained specific keywords such as "UAP," "UFO," and "AARO." While the search was intended to uncover substantive internal analysis or investigative findings, the final production was limited to emails prepared for a congressional oversight hearing.
These documents confirm that the Department of Energy utilized briefing materials addressing UAP topics to prepare the Secretary for potential questioning by lawmakers, specifically noting that representatives like Tim Burchett might raise the subject. However, the agency withheld the majority of the content under FOIA Exemption (b)(5), which protects pre-decisional and deliberative communications. By narrowing the scope of the search during the processing phase, the agency excluded broader correspondence, leaving the public with little insight beyond the fact that UAP matters are occasionally addressed in high-level briefing packets. Ultimately, the release provides no evidence of independent UAP investigations within the department, as the available information focuses primarily on standard congressional preparation and existing Department of Defense positions.
