US Navy Destroyer Engages in Fire Exchange with Iranian-Flagged Vessel Near Strait of Hormuz

The U.S. Navy destroyer USS Spruance intercepted an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel, the M/V Touska, attempting to sail toward Bandar Abbas, Iran, on Sunday in the north Arabian Sea. The incident occurred as part of the ongoing naval blockade enforced by the United States against Iranian ports since April 13, following failed peace talks between Washington and Tehran.

The USS Spruance issued warnings to the Touska after it ignored repeated instructions to comply with the blockade. After six hours of non-compliance, the destroyer fired several rounds from its 5-inch MK 45 Gun into the cargo vessel's engine room, disabling its propulsion system. U.S. Marines boarded the ship, which remains under U.S. custody. The Touska was previously sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury for prior illegal activities.

U.S. President Donald Trump highlighted the incident on Truth Social, emphasizing that the Iranian crew ignored warnings and faced a decisive response from American forces. The blockade involves significant military resources, including 10,000 troops, over a dozen warships, and more than 100 aircraft. While ships not destined for Iranian ports can navigate the Strait of Hormuz, all vessels transiting to or from Iranian destinations are subject to interception.

Iranian officials vowed retaliation, calling the U.S. action "armed piracy." Tehran rejected new peace talks, citing Washington's aggressive measures and shifting demands. The escalating tensions raise concerns over regional stability as both sides appear poised for further confrontation.
