Six F-16 Pilots Honored with Distinguished Flying Crosses for Role in Iran Strikes
The U.S. Air Force recently recognized six F-16 fighter pilots with the Distinguished Flying Cross for their participation in Operation Midnight Hammer, a series of airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities last year. The awards were presented by Gen. Adrian Spain, head of Air Combat Command, during a ceremony on May 5, though the details were not publicly shared until Friday, May 8.
The operation, conducted between June 21 and 22, involved a massive force of 125 aircraft, including B-2 Spirit stealth bombers, F-15s, F-16s, F-22s, and F-35s. The mission saw the aerial armada penetrate Iranian airspace to carry out strikes on three key nuclear sites. B-2 bombers dropped 14 GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators, while Navy cruise missiles targeted a third facility, causing significant damage.
The six pilots honored were Lt. Col. Christopher M. Beckett, Maj. Matthew J. Croghan, Maj. Alexander J. Trembly, Capt. Abigail D. Maio, Capt. Megan C. Langas, and Capt. Daniel J. Dodson. They were commended for their "heroism and bravery" during the mission, which played a critical role in what has been described as a pivotal moment in the 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel in 2025.
Gen. Spain emphasized the importance of the operation, stating that it demonstrated the readiness and precision of American airpower to project force globally. The strikes not only showcased the capabilities of U.S. aircraft but also underscored the strategic significance of such operations in deterring potential adversaries.
