Mother Arrested for Daughter's Alcohol-Related Death After Home Search Reveals 173 Empty Bottles

A Colorado mother has been charged with second-degree murder following the death of her 16-year-old daughter in March. The girl was found unresponsive at home and pronounced dead by first responders, leading to an investigation that uncovered extensive evidence of chronic alcohol use. An autopsy revealed that Grace Ryan had an abnormally fatty liver, indicating prolonged heavy drinking, which led to aspiration pneumonia as the cause of death.

The case has drawn significant attention due to the volume of alcohol consumed in the months preceding the girl's death. A search of the family home discovered 173 empty liquor bottles stashed under Grace's bed. According to prosecutors, the mother, Gretchen Leanne Ryan, had been secretly providing her daughter with alcohol almost daily since the fall of 2025 and hid this from the father, who spent most of his time in the basement.

Forensic analysis of devices belonging to both mother and daughter revealed messages indicating that Grace experienced severe physical symptoms such as vomiting, difficulty walking, and even needing diapers due to her excessive drinking. She reportedly expressed fear about dying and asked for help from her mother. The girl had been withdrawn from school and enrolled in online classes, completing only one semester of ninth grade before her death.

Gretchen Ryan was arrested on May 15 with a warrant issued by the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office and is being held without bond set at $500,000. She is scheduled to appear in court again on June 17 for further proceedings.
