Bellingcat Reveals Digital Ties Between Viory and Ruptly News Agencies

Bellingcat has uncovered significant digital connections between Abu Dhabi-based video news agency Viory and Russia Today's Ruptly branch. The investigation found shared IP addresses, security certificates registered to Ruptly used by a Viory-linked site, and data exchanges between the two entities. This discovery adds new evidence to previous reports suggesting ties between the organizations. Despite these findings, both agencies have denied any association when contacted for comment.

Viory positions itself as a "video news agency of the Global South," providing raw video footage to over 170 countries. The company claims an extensive network of more than 3,000 video journalists worldwide and has established partnerships with numerous government bodies and educational institutions across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. These collaborations include agreements with Mali's national broadcasting office, Namibia’s Broadcasting Corporation, and Cambodia’s Ministry of Information.

The implications of these digital connections are significant in an era where misinformation is rampant. Viory emphasizes the importance of verification in journalism, yet its own murky origins raise questions about the integrity of its content and partnerships. This revelation could undermine trust in Viory's mission to combat misinformation while also casting doubt on the credibility of news outlets that rely on their footage.

The findings highlight the challenges faced by journalists and media consumers in verifying the authenticity and neutrality of video content, particularly when dealing with organizations that operate across international borders and have complex digital footprints.
