Dutch Assembly Line Boosts Production of Combat Robots for Ukraine
Estonian defense company Milrem Robotics has inaugurated a new assembly line in Born, Netherlands, to produce its THeMIS unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs). This facility will work alongside local partner VDL Defentec, which specializes in armored vehicle manufacturing. The first UGV from this production line was delivered to the Dutch government as part of an agreement to supply over 100 such robots to Ukrainian forces.
The THeMIS vehicles are highly versatile and can be configured for various battlefield roles, including combat operations with weapon mounts, surveillance duties with sensors, and logistics support by transporting supplies or evacuating wounded soldiers. Since their deployment in Ukraine starting from 2022, these UGVs have proven to be reliable and effective in combat conditions.
Milrem Robotics CEO Kuldar Väärsi highlighted the significance of this production milestone, emphasizing that it showcases Europe's ability to quickly ramp up defense manufacturing capacity and provide critical support to Ukraine. The assembly line is designed for flexibility and scalability, enabling rapid increases in production as needed.
The integration of unmanned systems on land and in the air has become a pivotal aspect of modern warfare in Ukraine. Both Ukrainian and Russian forces extensively use drones and UGVs, making it nearly impossible for human soldiers to operate on the front lines without immediate detection and targeting by enemy forces. This underscores the growing importance of such technologies in contemporary military strategies.
