Ohio Bar Owner Sentenced to Seven Years for Dragging 9-Year-Old in Hummer Incident

Ohio bar owner Jeffrey Atkinson, 57, has been sentenced to seven years in prison and a ten-year driver's license suspension following his conviction for dragging a nine-year-old girl in his Hummer. The incident occurred on July 22, 2024, in Dayton, where Atkinson hit Ashley Escalante as she rode her bicycle with friends through a crosswalk. He then proceeded to drag her down the street for half a mile before fleeing the scene.

Bodycam footage revealed that Atkinson was extremely intoxicated at the time of the incident, with his blood alcohol content (BAC) measured at 0.34, significantly above the legal limit of 0.08. When questioned by police, he admitted to being "too drunk to pass" a field sobriety test and made statements like "F— it, I'm drunk," indicating his impaired state.

Ashley's injuries were severe; she lost her left leg below the knee and sustained significant damage to her right leg. The incident left Ashley traumatized and facing lifelong physical challenges. Despite these hardships, she expressed forgiveness towards Atkinson in court during his sentencing hearing, stating, "I forgive you... not because you deserve it but because my heart doesn't deserve to live full of hatred."

However, the judge was less lenient, handing down the maximum sentence for Atkinson's reckless behavior and endangerment of a child. The case highlights the severe consequences of drunk driving and underscores the importance of responsible alcohol consumption, especially when operating vehicles.
