MQ-28 Ghost Bat Drone Makes Debut in Multinational Pacific Exercise

The MQ-28 Ghost Bat drone recently made its debut during the Valiant Shield 2026 exercise, a large-scale military drill involving multiple nations across Japan, Guam, Hawaii, and Australia. This marks the first time the autonomous aircraft has participated in such an extensive multinational operation. The event is part of ongoing efforts to validate the capabilities of collaborative combat aircraft (CCA) like the MQ-28, which Boeing recently tested off the coast of southern California to assess rapid deployment from allied bases.

Australia's participation includes deploying a P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft and around 80 personnel. Notably, Australian Defense Forces aviator observers are working alongside U.S.-led MQ-28 operators during the exercise. This collaboration allows for real-world testing of how uncrewed systems can enhance operational effectiveness in complex, multi-domain environments. The Ghost Bat's involvement is seen as a significant step toward integrating autonomous drones into broader military strategies.

Directed by the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, Valiant Shield 2026 kicked off on Monday and will continue through July 1. Exercise organizers emphasize that such drills are crucial for demonstrating advanced multidomain capabilities with allied forces, ensuring seamless innovation and joint operations in contested regions. The MQ-28's role is expected to focus on enhancing human-machine teaming and extending the reach of crewed platforms.
