Grandmother Suspected in Upstate New York Murder-Suicide Involving Family of Six
On June 23, law enforcement officials responded to a residence in Mechanicville, New York, following reports that the occupants had not been seen or heard from for several days. Upon arrival, officers discovered six individuals deceased inside the apartment. The victims were identified as Amy Steadman, aged 64; Sarah Myers, aged 44; and four children ranging between 10 and 13 years old: Harper Harmon, Hudson Harmon, Gavin Harmon, and Gracelynn Harmon. Steadman was Myers’ mother and the grandmother of the deceased children.
Mechanicville Chief of Police William Rabbitt announced during a press conference on June 25 that Amy Steadman is suspected to have intentionally poisoned her daughter Sarah Myers and four grandchildren before taking her own life. Syringes were found at the scene, indicating that the children had been injected with drugs. Additionally, one child was reportedly stabbed. The police chief stated that evidence inside the apartment included prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs, which led investigators to believe Steadman carried out the murders.
The family's tragedy is further complicated by a recent custody battle involving the father of the deceased children, Brady Harmon. According to reports, Harmon had been trying for six years to gain custody or visitation rights but had not seen his children since 2019. He was scheduled to bring them to Utah on July 1 under a new joint custody agreement. A handwritten note found at the scene suggested that Steadman may have resented the recent court decision granting Harmon more involvement in his children's lives.
This case highlights the devastating impact of prolonged custody disputes and underscores the urgent need for better mental health support systems to prevent such tragic outcomes.
